NILES, Ill. — From gratitude, handshakes and hugs, a man and his family had an emotional exchange Thursday afternoon with the first responders from the Nile Fire Department who saved his life some two weeks ago.Back on Dec. 22, Christopher Szafraniec was going about a normal day at work, when he suffered a heart attack on the job. "I had just punched in," said Szafraniec. "I walked into the warehouse and started sweating profusely, [my] chest started to pound."911 was called and emergency responders arrived within minutes. According to Mike Pope, a firefighter-paramedic who responded to the scene, Szafraniec's heart stopped twice on the way to the hospital. "After the first minute or two, we got a pulse back after we shocked the patient once. [The] patient woke up and we advised him what happened," Pope said. "The second time, [the] patient did code in route to Lutheran general. We shocked him a second time, got a pulse back, and [he] was awake." ‘Having fun with it’: Meet the Chi...

Second batch of Jeffrey Epstein documents unsealed

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:15:06 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — The release of dozens of previously sealed court documents from a lawsuit involving Jeffrey Epstein might disappoint online sleuths who anticipated explosive new information. The roughly 60 documents released as of Thursday largely mention figures whose names were already known, including high-profile friends of Epstein’s and victims who have spoken publicly. In fact, the judge who made the call last month to release the information said she was doing so largely because much of it is already public. The plan to release the documents had prompted rumors that they contained a list of “clients” or “co-conspirators,” and misinformation about their contents is continuing to run rampant on social media.Still, the records do include some fresh details about the financier’s sexual abuse of teenage girls, and offer a reminder of how he leveraged his powerful connections to recruit his victims and help cover up his crimes. Coming off the holiday season, what do we want from our midwinter movies? Anything with snowstorms? (Yes!) Big blasts of sequel escapism? (Well, maybe.) The new film from the fiendish auteur behind “Parasite”? The fourth entry in the “Spider-Man” cinematic universe?Any reliable predictions of quality regarding the next three months of moviegoing are such stuff as dreams, and nervous, well-compensated industry executives, are made on. My role in this annual list of 10 is simplicity itself. Based on a time-tested combination of hope, guesswork and trailers, it’s time to roll the dice and hope for a few surprises — if not in originality, then in execution, and in the spirit of teaching old brand names a few new tricks.Release dates are subject to change.“Mean Girls” (Jan. 12): The 2004 film, written by Tina Fey, was inspired in part by the nonfiction book “Queen Bees and Wannabes.” Fey’s script handled the bullying, cliques, insecurity and vicious high school dynamics with a popular bl...
