Serge Schmemann: Violence by West Bank settlers cannot be ignored

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:16 GMT

After the well over 1,000 Israelis killed on Oct. 7, and the thousands more Palestinians in the Gaza Strip killed in the war against Hamas, it may appear unseemly to focus on the relatively small and sadly familiar clashes between settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank. But it would be a mistake to overlook the danger of the escalation in settler violence over the past month. That appears to be the calculation of the militant settlers and nationalist extremists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, ardent champions of expanding the Jewish presence in occupied territories. By all accounts, the number of Palestinians displaced or killed in clashes with the Israeli military have risen sharply since Oct. 7. Right-wing extremists have cited the Hamas attack as justification, but they also seem keenly aware that the diversion of global and Israeli attention away from the West Bank offers cover for more audacious land grabs. The immediate danger is that the West Bank will al...

Democratic leaders suggest party could support GOP stopgap funding bill

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:16 GMT

Democrats in Washington have softened their early opposition to the Republicans’ tiered approach to government spending, signaling a new openness to supporting the House GOP bill and averting a government shutdown at week’s end. In a Monday letter to House Democrats, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and his top deputies suggested that Democrats may support the Republicans’ short-term funding bill to keep the government open into early next year — a sharp change of tone that could pave the way for easy passage when the bill hits the chamber floor on Tuesday. Joined by Reps. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), Jeffries stopped short of saying party leaders are ready to endorse the GOP proposal, known as a continuing resolution (CR), which was introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) over the weekend. But he also didn’t rule it out. “At this time, we are carefully evaluating the proposal set forth by Republican leadership and discussing it wit...

Kiszla vs. Masisak: Was Jared Bednar’s tirade a sign of big trouble for Avalanche?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:16 GMT

Kiz: Coach Jared Bednar is correct. On too many nights early this season, the Avs have been a joke. And it’s not funny ha-ha. A team with the top-tier talent of Cale Makar, Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon has no excuse for getting blown out on a regular basis. Is this a leadership problem? Do the Avs miss captain Gabe Landeskog more than we can possibly know? And how does Bednar fix it?Masisak: For a team that spent training camp talking about the standards and culture here, including new guys gushing about how the grass was actually greener, the noncompetitive losses are startling. Bednar didn’t shy away from taking a minor jab at the leadership core after the meltdown against St. Louis. There are two reasons for optimism. One, the underlying numbers are still very good. And two, this team was in the weeds for a while last year and eventually looked like a Cup contender again in the final two months. This core has shown it can figure things out before.Kiz: The glory...

CSU run game gets spark from freshman Justin Marshall

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:16 GMT

All season long, the Colorado State football team has searched for some kind of spark to get its running game on track. Before the start of the season, it didn’t look like that would be a problem with last year’s leading rusher Avery Morrow returning and transfer Kobe Johnson expected to have a significant impact as well. But along the way, both got injured, Johnson so much that the Rams decided to shut him down and redshirt him this season. Morrow is back but hasn’t been 100%.In the meantime, CSU turned to redshirt sophomore Vann Schield, who carried the load for a few games. Then last Saturday in the Rams’ 22-19 victory over San Diego State, the Rams got the spark they have been looking for.In his first college game, true freshman Justin Marshall rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, making him the first CSU freshman to rush for 100 yards in a game since Ron Harris in 1974.“We’ve had a lot of injuries,” CSU head coach Jay Norvell said. “We lost Kobe. Avery was hurt for several weeks...

Violent sucker-punch caught on camera leaves 68-year-old man severely injured

A brutal attack on an elderly store employee in Riverside County that was captured on surveillance footage last month has left the victim seriously injured and hospitalized. Now, the grieving family wants justice.  The violent assault happened on Oct. 27 outside Sun Valley Market and Liquor on Simpson Road in Winchester where the victim, 68-year-old Carlos Munguia, has worked for four years.  Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the incident.  The 68-year-old can be seen on video taking the trash out with a dolly in the store’s parking lot when a man approaches him and starts talking to him before suddenly sucker-punching Munguia and running away.  “Right now, he barely opens his eyes. There’s times that he knows who we are and days where he doesn’t know who we are,” Alma Romero, the victim’s daughter-in-law told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson. “It’s sad. We can’t talk to him or bring him home.”   Tarzana man accused of dumping body parts now charged with...
