There’s a new tool in the effort to reduce litter on Lake Tahoe’s famous beaches this Fourth of July weekend.Think of it as kind of like R2D2 with a trash bag. Or the Mars Rover with a “Keep Tahoe Blue” bumper sticker. On Wednesday, the morning after many crowds have gone home from the famous Sierra Nevada lake that Mark Twain once called “the fairest picture the whole earth affords,” a remote-controlled robot will sift through the sands at Kings Beach, Zephyr Cove and other popular Tahoe beaches to pick up bottle caps, cigarette butts and other trash left behind by the holiday masses. The computerized custodian moves about 2 miles an hour, and is roughly the size of a riding lawn mower.Known as “BeBot,” for “beach robot,” the remote-controlled, solar-powered, self-driving battery-operated contraption methodically sifts sand, collecting trash up to four inches below the surface that otherwise could end up eventually in the pr...49ers QB Brock Purdy proposes to girlfriend

By Amaya McDonald | CNNMegalodon, one of the most fearsome sharks that ever lived, wasn’t the cold-blooded killer it’s made out to be — at least not literally.Through an analysis of fossilized megalodon teeth, scientists have discovered the extinct shark was partially warm-blooded, with a body temperature around 7 degrees Celsius (44 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than estimated seawater temperatures at the time, according to a study published last week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.“We found that O. megalodon had body temperatures significantly elevated compared to other sharks, consistent with it having a degree of internal heat production as modern warm-blooded (endothermic) animals do,” study coauthor Robert Eagle, professor of marine science and geobiology at UCLA, said in an email. The findings suggest this distinct trait played a key role in the ancient predator’s terrifying size — and its eventual disappearance.Gigantism in megalodonBelieved to be...3 evade arrest during Santa Cruz Mountains manhunt

(KRON) -- Three thieves evaded law enforcement Monday morning following a manhunt in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The search was triggered by an armed robbery that happened in a nature preserve wilderness area near Highway 9 and Highway 35 just before 8:15 a.m. "The victim was robbed at gunpoint of their belongings by multiple suspects. The suspects were spotted driving in the area by a neighboring agency and became involved in a pursuit," the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office wrote. The thieves were driving a car that had been stolen in Oakland. During the police pursuit, the stolen car crashed near Highway 9's mile marker 24 and the suspects fled on foot. Investigators said they found two loaded guns at the crash scene. With the thieves still at-large, the Sheriff's Office ordered nearby residents to shelter in place. The manhunt was suspended before 1 p.m. without any arrests, and the order was lifted. The suspects were all between ages 20-25.
