Dallas Keuchel’s return to majors is a good one for Twins

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:53:32 GMT

Dallas Keuchel’s road back to the majors made its biggest stop on Sunday when the veteran left-hander started a big league game for the first time in nearly a year.Keuchel didn’t get the decision in his first start since Sept. 2, 2022 — or provide the biggest bang, which belonged to Matt Wallner after his two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth. But Keuchel, 35, was a big reason the Twins swept the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-3 victory.“It was really nice. I just kinda wanted to start off on the right foot,” Keuchel said.Keuchel gave up eight hits and walked two in five innings, and didn’t strike out a single batter. But he left the game with a 1-0 deficit after stranding runners at second and third to end the fifth. The Diamondbacks didn’t hit many balls hard against Keuchel, their lone run off him scored on Tommy Pham’s soft grounder to second that the Twins couldn’t turn into a double play in the fifth.Throwing an assortment of offspeed pitches — his fastball was clocked mostly at ...

Adoptees, birth parents prepare for Minnesota birth records to be unsealed

Mary Jo Lindeberg is 81, but she has never stopped wondering: Who is she, really? She was born in St. Paul, just weeks after Pearl Harbor. She was adopted by an oral surgeon and his office nurse. They changed her name from Carol Louise to Mary Jo and raised her as their own.And for most of a century, she’s carried unanswered questions.“As a kid, I remembered having the fantasy of — oh, I bet my real mom was probably a beauty star and my father was probably a leader of industry,” she said. “Well, we all know that’s probably not the case.”She just doesn’t know. It’s a story common to many families — a secret birth, a new identity and a new love for a child — but also often decades of speculation and separation. For children born in Minnesota, adoptees get a new birth certificate and the details of their actual birth are sealed — their disclosure subject to a parental veto or to secrecy clauses in decades-old adoption agreements. It’s happened thousands of times a year in the past. But a ...

By LINDSEY BAHR (AP Film Writer)Greta Gerwig should be feeling closer to fine these days. In just three weeks in theaters, “Barbie” is set to sail past $1 billion in global ticket sales, breaking a record for female directors that was previously held by Patty Jenkins, who helmed “Wonder Woman.”“Barbie,” which Gerwig directed and co-wrote, added another $53 million from 4,178 North American locations this weekend and $74 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.03 billion, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The Margot Robbie-led and produced film has been comfortably seated in first place for three weeks and it’s hardly finished yet. It crossed $400 million domestic and $500 million internationally faster than any other movie at the studio, including the Harry Potter films.“As distribution chiefs, we’re not often rendered speechless by a film’s performance, but Barbillion has blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water,” said Jeff Goldstein and A...

Legends watch Oakland A’s beat SF Giants behind Allen’s two home runs

OAKLAND — Before Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s inducted five franchise icons into the team’s hall of fame.Jason Giambi, the 2000 AL MVP who hit 241 home runs in eight seasons in Oakland, was among those honored. The 5-foot-8 Nick Allen would not have been the obvious choice among current A’s players to replicate one of Giambi’s moonshots. But after hitting just one home run in his first 59 games, the shortstop tripled his season total, blasting two over the left field wall before a handful of A’s legends.“I woke up on the right side of the bed,” Allen said jokingly when asked about what caused his big day at the plate. “But no, I felt like I was seeing the ball well today. ”Allen’s surprising home runs in the second and fifth innings keyed Oakland’s 8-6 victory over the Giants (61-51) before an announced crowd of 27,381 at the Coliseum, as the two teams finished the Bay Bridge Series at two wins a...

Jorge Polanco walked and Wallner sent a soaring drive off the facing of the right-center scoreboard off new Arizona closer Paul Sewald (3-2), who was acquired from Seattle in a trade Monday.“With us struggling, and finally getting that chance to try and get off this losing streak and get called upon to do what I’m supposed to do and then fail miserably, it’s disappointing,” Sewald said.Wallner’s home run was no surprise to Kepler, however.“He’s legit,” Kepler said of his rookie teammate. “He’s a beast. Glover wins Wyndham Championship. Thomas season ends by inches.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Lucas Glover did more than extend his PGA Tour season Sunday. He won the Wyndham Championship with a 2-under 68 that sends him into the FedEx Cup playoffs with more big opportunities in front of him.Glover managed a two-hour rain delay and took advantage of a faltering Russell Henley to win for the first time in more than two years and earn an unlikely spot in the lucrative postseason.Justin Thomas ended his season with a shot he won’t soon forget. Needing a birdie on the 18th hole, his pitch from 100 feet short of the hole smacked off the base of the pin and settled inches away as Thomas fell to the ground in disbelief. Now he has to wait three weeks to see if his worst season — this is the first time Thomas has failed to make the playoffs — will cost him a pick for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.Glover now has five PGA Tour wins separated by 18 years, and there might not have been another except for deciding to switch to a long putter, a move inspired by Adam...
