McEnery: San Jose needs a common sense approach to BART extension

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:42:16 GMT

The multi-billion dollar project to extend BART six miles into the heart of San Jose is about to begin. One question must be answered: Should it?It is said that you should never start a project without knowing the reason why. We must have that answer and another about the commitment of an accountable leadership, not a board of elected officials from other places. They should also have the judgment to see the facts and do their job of looking at the financial reality of both construction and operation. There can be no magical thinking, no manna from heaven hopes, and they must be ready to commit something beyond “thoughts and prayers” to those who will be collateral damage in a rush to attend this ground breaking. The billion-dollar VTA boring mole will soon be traveling beneath our streets, operated by the scandal-plagued BART management team. This is a group dominated by its unions and an assortment of contractors and consultants. To add to that, the politicized BART board and manage...

Why the Stop Trump effort all comes down to South Carolina

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:42:16 GMT

South Carolina has long been the state most likely to predict the eventual winner of the Republican presidential nomination. This cycle, it will likely be even more crucial. The state Republican Party’s decision to schedule its election for Feb. 24 means the first-in-the-South primary will potentially take place more than a month after Iowa and New Hampshire. That open stretch means South Carolina is poised to carry more weight than ever in determining whether former President Donald Trump’s march to a third consecutive nomination will face a sustained threat stretching past the early states and into the meat of the primary calendar.Consider this: The GOP primary starts in Iowa in mid-January. New Hampshire votes the week after, perhaps on Jan. 23. Then there’s a long gap until South Carolina. While Nevada Republicans could hold their caucuses either before or immediately after South Carolina, the larger electorate and delegate haul from South Carolina has focused far more attention o...

Mike Lupica: Damian Lillard doesn’t owe the Trail Blazers anything. He’s earned the right to leave

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:42:16 GMT

If you are choosing up sides here between the Trail Blazers and Damian Lillard, you pick Lillard all day long. You do this unless you are a Knicks fan, because Knicks fans would rather Lillard go anywhere except to the Heat if he leaves Portland, including the moon.Of course, you can go the other way on Lillard. You can say that he has a contract, and a real good one, that nobody forced him to sign a two-year extension with the Trail Blazers last summer, one that runs through the 2026-27 season and will pay him around $120 millions over its final two years. He is one of the best players on the planet and he is being paid that way, one hundred percent. And because the Blazers are paying him that way, they had a right to assume that a year later he wouldn’t want to go play basketball somewhere else.Somewhere else means old Coach Riley’s Heat, a team that a month ago was in the NBA Finals against the Jokic Nuggets. Lillard and his agent Aaron Goodwin have made it clear that ...

The 10th, however, was a different story.Facing the Padres in the final series before the All-Star break, the Mets showed resolve by tying the game in the fifth inning after a rocky start, then finishing the job with a four-run 10th inning to win 7-5 on Friday night at Petco Park.It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win, and it was the Mets’ sixth in a row, a new season-high.“We fought back on that one,” said second baseman Jeff McNeil. “Battled all night and it feels good to get that one.”Facing left-hander Tom Cosgrove (1-2) in the 10th, McNeil, who has struggled all season but even more in recent weeks, drilled a double down the line to lead off the inning and score the ghost runner.“In that situation, I’m just trying to get him over,” McNeil said.
